Cavradi gorge in the Swiss Alps

Noreen Masaki was comissioned to facet several rock crystals from the swiss Alps for a private collection. All but one are from the famous Cavradi gorge.

Noreen Masaki is cutting on a Ultra-Tec faceting machine.

The pavillion is cut first and then polished.

Here the stone is transferred and the crown will be cut next.

Noreen designs or selects a fitting facet diagram, to accomodate the shape of the stone. The layout of the facets is next to the importance of identifying appropriate cutting angles. Only when the optical properties of the stone are taken into account properly an optimum of briliance will be displayed in the finished gem.

The Cavradi gorge is certainly one of the best-known mineral localities of Switzerland, and among the most important hematite localities worldwide.
